About

Bhavani Sunila is a doctoral student in IMT Atlantique Bretagne-Pays de la Loire in France and University of Adelaide in Australia. Her research mainly focuses on developing anomaly and detection systems using human-in-the-loop models to counter attack data poisoning attacks such as oracling and evading.

During her pursual of Master’s degree in Mathematics from National Institute of Technology Calicut, she got selected for a Fellowship Programme in Indian Institute of Technology Madras. This gave her a chance to learn Multivariable Differential Calculus, which ultimately led to her M.Sc. project, namely, Convex Methods in Optimization for Learning Theory. The project has not only helped her in understanding the complexities in Optimization but also opened doors to Machine Learning Theory. This has aided her in realising that she wants to equip herself with necessary knowledge foundation that will allow her to conduct effective research as well as to extend her help in technology driven sectors.

Initially doubtful about machine learning, she became increasingly curious as she discovered how mathematical concepts could be applied to the technological advancements of today’s world. Throughout her studies, she overcame early challenges through rigorous coursework and reading to build an understanding of the mathematical principles behind machine learning. Completing the course on “Mathematical Foundation of Machine Learning” during her Master’s program further strengthened her ability to connect abstract theory with real-world applications. Bhavani has gained an appreciation for the role of mathematics in technological innovation and is now interested in applying her theoretical knowledge to research in the field of machine learning and technology.
