About

Jorge is an electronics engineer and MSc in Microwave and Optics with a multidisciplinary background that spans RF systems, satellite engineering, and semiconductor manufacturing. Motivated by his strong curiosity, he has explored a variety of technical environments across multiple countries and sectors. After gaining valuable experience in industry, he chose to return to academia to expand his knowledge and contribute to the advancement of ultrafast laser technologies.

His early career focused on space systems, where he contributed to the development and integration of the Venezuelan remote sensing satellite VRSS-2. Working in close collaboration with engineering teams in China, he was involved in subsystem design, assembly, integration, and testing and phases of the satellite. This experience gave him a strong system-level perspective and reinforced his hands-on approach to engineering challenges.

Jorge was later awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to pursue the EMIMEO master’s program, earning a joint MSc from the University of Limoges (France) and the University of Brescia (Italy). During this period, he studied photonics, laser systems, fibre optics, and numerical modelling. It was through this experience that he discovered a deep passion for photonics.

Following his graduation, Jorge joined the tech giant ASML, a global leader in semiconductor equipment. There, he focused on developing and improving diagnostic tools for optical metrology modules used in advanced photolithography systems at chip manufacturing sites worldwide. This experience also strengthened his interdisciplinary expertise and reinforced his ability to work in global, high-tech environments.

Along the way, he has worked across sectors including aerospace, energy, and semiconductor industry, developing a practical understanding of how to translate complex ideas into functional systems. He approaches research with a systems-oriented mindset, blending analytical thinking with hands-on problem solving.

Interests

Beyond academics Jorge enjoys delving into astronomy, cooking and poetry. In his free time, he also enjoys hiking.
