Greenhouse gases are increasing in the modern atmosphere, causing rapid global warming. To put the modern changes in context, we need to know how greenhouse gases varied prior to industrialisation and what natural processes controlled them. As an AAPP Ice Cores Research Associate, Andy measures stable isotopes of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide in ice core air bubbles. Combined with modelling, the data help us understand the causes of variations in the past.
