My first year as a PhD student in the AUFRANDE Program

by Hamza Nisar

The journey of my PhD began in mid-2023 when I stumbled upon the AUFRANDE program calls on LinkedIn. What caught my attention was the unique opportunity it offered—a dual-degree program spanning two countries. This was more than just an academic pursuit; it was a chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Without hesitation, I applied.

To my delight, I progressed through the initial selection phase, aced the interview, and received my agreement to join the program. The AUFRANDE team, along with my professors, provided incredible support, ensuring my onboarding process was seamless and stress-free. Their dedication made the transition smooth, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in my life.

A new beginning in France

Arriving in France was a transformative experience for me—my first international journey. Everything felt new, from the cultural nuances to the bustling lab environment where I was warmly welcomed. Meeting colleagues in the lab and exploring their state-of-the-art research projects was inspiring. It was the perfect blend of academic rigor and personal growth.

The roller coaster of a PhD journey

A PhD is often described as a roller coaster ride, and I’ve experienced my share of highs and lows during this first year. There were moments of intense work, challenges that pushed me to my limits, and instances of self-doubt. But amidst the challenges, there were also incredible moments of joy and achievement.

Exploring the picturesque landscapes of France and visiting its iconic landmarks provided a much-needed balance to the demanding academic schedule. Attending conferences across Europe broadened my perspective, allowing me to engage with experts in my field and gain insights into cutting-edge research. These experiences not only enriched my academic journey but also shaped my outlook on life.

Looking ahead

As I reflect on my first year, I realize how much I’ve grown—both as a researcher and as an individual. The AUFRANDE program has given me the opportunity to immerse myself in two diverse cultures, collaborate with brilliant minds, and push the boundaries of my knowledge. I’m excited to see what the coming years hold as I continue this incredible journey.

To anyone considering a PhD or an international program like AUFRANDE, my advice is simple: embrace the challenges, cherish the experiences, and stay curious. This journey is as much about personal growth as it is about academic achievements 🎓✨.
